These materials are to be placed on each study program’s Resource Centre and or the institution’s library which can be freely accessed by the students during break time or when the lecturers are not available in the class. But, how? TOEIC-based English Self Accessed Materials (SAM) is one suggested solution for introducing TOEIC to the students and providing TOEIC practices. The points for improvement then that the students have to be made familiar to TOEIC and be prepared with TOEIC exercises. Last, class in polytechnic lasts from 8 am to 3 pm, therefore, in between, it is difficult to conduct special additional class on TOEIC. Second, English language learning in class has been focused on the already-set-up English syllabus which is competency based and not related to TOEIC. First, students are not yet familiar with those kinds of tests. There are some reasons of why most polytechnic students fail on TOEIC test. They are finally able to meet the standard after repeating the test for up to 2 times and unfortunately, with minimum score. However, it has been found that most students’ TOEIC score do not meet the standard. In Bali State Polytechnic, for example, the minimum score is 450. In other words, the students are only able to graduate if they are able to meet the minimum TOEIC score set up by the polytechnic where they study. The recent regulation of polytechnic education in Indonesia even says that polytechnic to-be graduates have to take TOEIC test and meet a certain minimum score to be able to graduate. As higher educational institution preparing professional workforces, polytechnic has been focusing on improving the graduates’ English language proficiency.
